Plastic Bags

Hi there,

I was wondering if there were still a large number of people out there continuing to use new plastic bags each time they went shopping.

The fact that there are so many reusable alternatives out there should make people think twice. They can do something about saving the environment, and it doesn't take much effort!

One of the problems with banning plastic bags is people are going to buy them anyway for their waste. I mainly use my own bags for shopping but will ocassionally get something in a plastic bag which I recycle to get rid of trash. Of course in an ideal world we wouldnt put our trash in a plastic bag so whats the alternative to this? I do of course send all my organic waste to the compost heap and papaer etc into the recycle bin. However people in flats cant dispose of food scraps in a compost heap.
Maybe if plastic bags were made as an on request item at the checkout rather than just an automatic response. For example I was in a Dollar saver shop and bought a Doormat and some wooden pegs and she pulled out a massive plastic bag to put them in.

I know of some places that charge you to get plastic bags. This I feel makes people think twice about getting a plastic bag for one or two small items.

Why can't the shops supply plastic bags that decompose in about three months once exposed to light and air, a very small number of shops have them and they do work.

I know they last a very long time those so called green shopping bags that you can buy are unsuitable for landfill once they are finished, a bit like some kinds of batteries.
