I recently purchased a BBQ, and I must say it is one of the best $500 I have ever spent. I will tell you why:

1 - Uses no power. Think about it, cooking in the kitchen
- Power used in the kitchen: light, range hood and if you are unlucky, to power the hotplates is abolished as you are outdoors so no need for a range hood, you are using LNG which costs bugger all and nine times out of ten, you have the natural daylight around.

2 - Roasting
- Instead of using a power hungry oven, I used the roasting hood on the BBQ as it has a temperature gauge on it. No more fan forced oven, no electric element and again, used LNG.

3 - Cleaning
- Is as easy as wheeling out into the lawn, throwing on some environmentally friendly cleaner and hosing/scrubbing it down. No more caustic oven cleaner, no more acidic white goods cleaner and your lawn gets a watering at the same time.

4 - Scalability & Space
- I can cook for up to 20 people on the BBQ whilst still been outside and socialising. Instead of been cramped up in the kitchen using small pans, I have a massive hotplate to work with. Again, less power used as I use the daylight outside, no range hood as again, it is outside and cleaning up as I said earlier is a breeze.
- Once finished, putting the BBQ away is simple, it doesn't require its own multi shelf cupboard and is ready to go in a jiffy. Also if you live in an apartment, there is generally enough room on your balcony to have a BBQ which saves even more precious space.

So the best thing you can do is ditch the kitchen and it's high power drain for a more friendly, both environmentally and socially, alternative. The money saved on electricity will soon cover the cost of the BBQ.
